Career Development is a process in which a person enhances his educational or professional knowledge or advancement in a workplace. This is a lifelong process thru which one can achieve his goals and lead a successful life. Many Employers recognize the benefits of Career Development and offer their employees - sponsorships for pursuing higher education, offer internal job postings etc. which help their employees to achieve their aim. One has to take advantage of this to develop their skill sets. On the other hand it helps the Employer to meet the demand for specialized workforce and reduce the employees’ attrition rate (churn rate) by retention of employees. By implementing Career Development Programs, Employees have the feel that their Employer cares for them. They would continue their employment and also recommend the company to their friends.
For some of them who are already employed there may be times where there is no sign of progression or hike in pay. At this juncture they may decide to change jobs or move in to a different company. This type of situation is risky and challenging. Before moving on to the new firm, the individual should research about the company find out how often appraisals or pay hikes occur and most importantly the security of the job.
